Mick Jones, Lou Gramm Considering New Foreigner Record

Founding Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones and founding singer Lou Gramm are reportedly going to write and record together again.

The catch is that the pair of 2013 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees are basing the songs off of "old ideas."

Jones revealed in a new interview that reconnecting with Gramm in recent years has sparked the pair's long-dormant chemistry.

"There are several ideas in the works," Jones told Rock Talk With Mitch Lafon. "And we have a couple of tracks that we've had mulling around for a little while. And Lou and I have been listening to some old ideas that we had. There's a possibility or a chance of incorporating these in whatever format we decide to release it in. It might even be an EP. We're gathering material as we speak."

On Foreigner's last tour, Jones paired members of Foreigner's classic lineup with its current touring lineup to celebrate the band's 40th anniversary.

Gramm, along with drummer Dennis Elliott, keyboardist Al Greenwood, guitarist Ian McDonald and bassist Rick Wills joined Foreigner's current Jones-led lineup for two shows in October at Michigan's Soaring Eagles Casino & Resort, which were filmed for a potential live DVD release.

The two lineups first performed together on Long Island, NY, last July. Jones later told Billboard he was thrilled with the fan response.

The guitarist has publicly considered doing more shows with the classic lineup in 2018. In the Mitch LaFon interview, he even considered using both lineups to record new material.

He also talked about how heartwarming it was to see his band's classic lineup and its current lineup get along so well.

“I'm very fortunate in that way. I think just the nature of the songs, the range it takes to sing them, and the depth, emotionally, to put them across, it almost requires more than one singer, in a way,” he said. “But both of them could, obviously, carry the set.”

Jones says there are more than 10 songs he's considering for the release, but he doubts the band will release anything of that nature before the fall.

For now, he's Jones says he's enjoying his time off and he's happy that he was able to bring two generations of Foreigner together this past year. He says the band is in a good place right now.

“It made us reflect a little bit on what we had and the wonderful moments we've had together, and it was very emotional,” Jones said. “And that's kind of where we picked up the relationship a bit more, after that, and gradually we figured it would be great if we could do something like this for the fans, so we launched into it, and it was very successful. The band, the old and new members, got on like a house on fire, as did Lou and the current singer, Kelly Hansen. So it was kind of magical in a way. I just couldn't quite figure it. But it really did. And it really was very emotional and uplifting.”
