Florida Man Robs Wendy's After Grilling Himself A Burger, Police Say

Florida man breaks into Wendy's to rob it, cooks burger

A modern-day 'Hamburglar' was caught on camera making himself a burger while allegedly burglarizing a Florida Wendy's.

Patrick Benson, 34, was arrested Saturday by the Martin County Sheriff's Office after security footage at the Jensen Beach fast-food location appeared to catch him cooking up a burger before walking off with the store's safe.

According to a release from the sheriff's office, Benson gained access to the restaurant by breaking the window of the Wendy's using a brick or large rock after the location closed for the night. Once inside, Benson went to the back of the restaurant to fire up the grill and make himself a burger. Once he was finished eating, he grabbed the restaurant's safe and left.

"Once in, he casually worked his way around the establishments and selected the items he was going to steal. In one case, he fired up the grill and cooked himself a hamburger before stealing the safe," the sheriff's office said.

Benson didn't appear to be in much of a rush, the sheriff's office said, moving "casually" through the restaurants choosing what he'd steal.

Authorities caught up with Benson after initially posting stills from surveillance video to their Facebook page from two locations where the Hamburglar had struck.

"Following the release of information, the Martin County Sheriff’s Office received multiple tips from the community about who the suspected “hamburglar” might be," the Martin County Sheriff's office wrote.

"The suspect has been successful at forcing his way into two restaurants cooking himself some dinner -- then stealing what he can't consume," the sheriff's office said Friday.

Benson has been charged with burglary, grand theft, and attempted burglary. Police say he may face additional charges.

Mayor McCheese, the Burger King, and Jack Box can feel safe that the 'Hamburglar' remains in the Martin County Jail.
