"Person of Interest" in Custody in St. Petersburg Murders

UPDATE

Tampa police have now identified the person of interest as Johnny Carnegie, 34, who is currently in the Hillsborough County jail on charges unrelated to the St. Pete shootings.

St. Petersburg police now say an as-yet unidentified "person of interest" is in custody in connection with two recent homicides in the city. Two people, 60-year-old Vernon and 24-year-old Corlenzo Williams, have been shot and killed in recent days, and a potential third victim was able to get away just in time.

Chief Anthony Holloway said yesterday the evidence seems to point to one man being responsible for random shootings. "We're assuming that the suspect is driving down the street," the chief said, "spotting these people who are walking along the street, having a conversation, and then shooting them."

Neighbors in the area say it's a frightening situation. This man, identified only as 'Willie," tells News Channel 8, he knew one of the victims, Corlenzo Williams. "He don't cause any harm to anybody," the man said. "He's a humble person." He went on to say that who ever shot him "needs to pay the penalty."

Police say the person of interest was taken into custody Wednesday evening with the help of the FBI and Tampa police. He's being held in Hillsborough County on charges unrelated to the St. Pete shootings.
