FORT LAUDERDALE, FL - Police say a fire was set by thieves at a South Florida Target as a distraction to shoplift.

Fort Lauderdale Police and Fire Rescue units responded to the Target located at the Coral Ridge Mall around 9:15 p.m Wednesday.

Officials say the suspects set clothes on fire in an attempt to distract employees so the thieves wouldn’t get caught stealing.

The store had to be evacuated as smoke and flames filled the section where the fire was ignited.

A Target employee used an extinguisher to put out the fire.

No injuries were reported.

Police are looking for the suspects who fled the scene as the fire raged.
