What's Awesome: Backpack Project Helps FL Homeless

The Backpack Project started when Amy Rodgers saw that homeless residents in Tallahassee, Florida needed access to personal care items that most of us take for granted. So the mom of two started collecting personal hygiene items and toiletries with her young sons and putting the razors, deodorant, and such in Ziploc bags.

But when she handed the baggie to someone living on the streets, she realized they had nowhere to put stuff. So Amy realized she needed backpacks and started a Facebook group asking for specific items and The Backpack Project has taken off from there, thanks to her passion to help those living in homelessness.

Amy sees homeless people as people first and she tries to help meet their needs and maintain their dignity. She keeps backpacks on-hand to pass out to anyone she sees in need and when she meets someone who has a special request, she tries to help make it happen for them. “There will always be people who are homeless, some by choice,” she explains. “But we can make it better.”
