Extreme Hot Weather Can Wilt Young Brains

With heatwaves expected to become more common due to climate change, researchers wanted to know the effects on teens and twenty-somethings. They were a bit surprised at the results.

During a five day heatwave in 2016, they put half of a group of young adults in air conditioning and the other half went without. Not only was the performance lower for the students without air, but they were slower too.

Most research has been done on vulnerable populations, but now we know everyone needs to get out of the heat. Interestingly, when outdoor temps fell during the study, the indoor readings didn’t, so that meant there was no break for those wilting brains and the students had an even harder time.

Moral of the story…avoid extreme heat to keep your brain happy.
