The mayor of Alton, Illinois had had enough of residents not obeying the state's stay at home order. So he told residents that the Alton Police Department would go ahead and begin issuing citations. If need be, he said the police could arrest violators.
The next day, police found a large gathering of violators partying it up late into the evening at Hiram's Tavern and of those that were there, one person the mayor knew one pretty well.... his wife, Shannon.
Mayor Brant Walker embarrassingly announced to his city that his police department investigated and stopped a social gathering in violation of the' statewide order at about 1am Sunday. The police informed him that his wife was there living it up and violating the rules.
The mayor's statement also said, "I instructed the Police Chief to treat her as he would any citizen violating the Stay At Home order and to ensure that she received no special treatment."
Everyone at the bar was issued a criminal complaint for reckless conduct which is punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500.
