Federal agents were conducting an offshore exercise last week and came across a downed plane, rescuing the pilot before the plane sank below the water’s surface. The plane went down in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Cedar Key, about a hundred miles north of Tampa. The pilot was just climbing out of the cockpit when the agents found him.

US Customs agents were performing joint operations with the Citrus County Sheriff’s office when they found the unnamed pilot. "As agents and deputies approached the sinking plane, an individual was spotted climbing out and standing on the fuselage,” CPB said in a press release. “Agents verified the pilot was the only occupant and were able to assist him."

CBP’s Deputy Director of Marine Operations Michael Matthies believes the quick actions of their agents may have prevented a tragedy. "We are thankful we have the proper resources and trained personnel to perform when incidents like this present themselves," Matthies says.
