Apple Watch Saved Teen Skiers Life

A California mom on a family ski vacation uses her Apple Watch to diagnose a potentially fatal condition in her teenage son. San Diego CBS news anchor Marcella Lee was on a skiing trip with her family in Colorado where her whole family was experiencing the effects of the high altitude, but they just tried to stay hydrated as their bodies acclimated to the altitude.

But then a few days into their trip, Lee’s son said he didn’t feel well enough to ski, so he stayed in. Lee checked on him that evening and says she noticed his lips and fingertips appeared to be a bit blue. Then she remembered that her Apple Watch has a feature that will measure oxygen saturation. She put her watch on her son and it showed an oxygen saturation level of 66%, well below the 88% threshold where you should seek immediate medical care.

The concerned mom took him to the emergency room and they confirmed that his oxygen level was dangerously low and soon diagnosed him with high altitude pulmonary edema. Lee had initially considered checking back in on her son in the morning, but doctors told her that there was a possibility that he could have slipped into a coma had he not gotten emergency care. And now she’s crediting her Apple Watch with saving her son’s life and telling the story so others can be reminded to listen to their bodies and get help when something isn’t quite right.
